Carob syrup

Carob Syrup: Greece's golden-sweet secret

Greece has been farming carob trees for almost 4,000 years, and this ancient superfood is making a modern resurgence. Unlike processed sweets, carob syrup, or “charoupomelo” as we call it, is a nutrient-rich substitute that has been feeding Mediterranean families for centuries. Dried carob pods are crushed to release their inherent sweetness, creating this dark, rich syrup.

Our organic farm produces our carob syrup using an organic process that has been handed down through the years. Because of its distinct climate and soil that is rich in limestone, Crete produces very sweet carobs. Long before there were processed sweeteners, carob syrup was used as a sugar replacement in Cretan homes. It would be used by families as a natural remedy for both adults and children.
It has a light, silky mouthfeel with molasses, chocolate, and caramel undertones. In contrast to certain syrups, it provides the ideal balance of natural sweetness that accentuates rather than overpowers other flavors. It contains no artificial additives or additional sugars; it is 100% pure carob extract.

Carob syrup is nutrient-dense. It has three times the calcium of milk, along with high levels of iron, phosphorus, magnesium, and vitamins A, B1, B2, and D. It is ideal for children because it is caffeine-free and has a low glycemic index, unlike chocolate. It offers long-lasting energy, is gluten-free and vegan, and has no artificial additives.

Its satisfying fiber level can aid with weight control and digestive health, and its antioxidants can help reduce inflammation. It aids in diabetic management as well. A tablespoon taken by itself or combined with warm water can relieve coughing and sore throats. Because of its high calcium concentration, it’s also excellent for bone health. To reap its benefits, start with just one tablespoon every day.
